When Allah Hits You With A Wall | Khutbah by Dr. Omar Suleiman

What does it mean when Allah “hits” you with a consequence? The Prophet ﷺ taught that when Allah wants good for a servant, He hastens the purification of their sins in this life. What does that mean for us today?

We begin by praising Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, by bearing witness that none has the right to be worshipped or unconditionally obeyed except for Him. And we bear witness that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His final messenger.
We ask Allah to send His peace and blessings upon him, the prophets and messengers that came before him, his family and companions that served alongside him and those that follow in his blessed path until the Day of Judgment. And we ask Allah to make us amongst them. Allahumma ameen.
Dear brothers and sisters, there is an incredible hadith, story from the hadith of a man in
the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), who makes a mistake that seems to resemble something that you would see in our times, not something that you think about when you think of that generation.
But we often have to pull ourselves back and remind ourselves that people were on a journey, that you had Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali (رضي الله عنهم).
And you had the cream of the crop and we love all of the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ), but amongst those that had become Muslim, you had people that were fresh
in their Islam and that were trying to overcome certain sins that still had traces of jahiliyyah as the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioned, that had to be expelled. And it was a journey for them. And we have to remind ourselves of that.
They were imperfect, but they were in the presence of a man, alayhi salatu wasalam, whom Allah had perfected his character. And so I read this narration to you.
It's from Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (رضي الله عنه). And it is an authentic narration in Muslim ibn Ahmad as well as in Sahih ibn Hibban.
That there was a man who in the time of the Prophet (ﷺ) came across a woman who in the time of jahiliyyah was an adulteress.
In the time of jahiliyyah, she was baghiya. She was known for everything bad in terms of the lack of modesty and in terms of what she would do for a living.
And so you have to think about this. You have a convert man and a convert woman, one who has a decorated past in all of the wrong ways and another one who knows her in that way.
So he says, fa ja'ala yula'ibuha ayy bil kalam. He started to flirt with her, to talk to her in a playful way because he just kind of got taken back into the way that they used to be.
hatta basata yadahu ilayha until he extended his hand towards her to touch her. At that point, qalat mah. She said, get off of me. Get away. Mah.
And listen to what she says. fa inna Allaha azza wa jalla qad dhahaba bil shirki wa ja'ana bil islam. This woman who was known for prostitution before Islam says, what are you doing?
Allah did away with jahiliyyah with us. He did away with the days of ignorance and He brought us Islam. SubhanAllah, we often go to the second part of the hadith, by the way, and we talk about what happens with the man. What an amazing transformation of this woman.
Look at the instinctive fitrah, the reflex and of the proofs of Islam is the genuine transformation of a generation, the genuine transformation of a generation that was unprecedented and unmatched.
And the transformation that follows of people that follow in their path in the future. So you can imagine the shock of this man. Like this is an old way of life. We've changed since Islam came.
Allah did away with shirk and all of its practices and Allah brought us Islam. Get away. So he was shocked. Young man. So he turned away. fa walla arrajulu fa asaba wajhahu alhait fa shajjahu.
So he turned away from her and just try to picture this. A little shock, disoriented like what just happened and also ashamed. He's also a Muslim. He's a recent convert too. So he's ashamed.
So he turned around and he ran right into a wall and the wall cut his head and the blood started to flow from his face. Now there are several things he can do here.
One of them, he could hide his face in shame, clean the blood off and go home and say, I hope no one saw that. What a lowly position to be in. Like we're living amongst the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Sahaba.
This woman just shamed me. This woman with this terrible past just shamed me and now here I am. What a lowly human being I am. But what did he do? ata an-Nabiyya (ﷺ).
He went to the Prophet (ﷺ) while the blood is still on his face. qala ya Rasulallah, halaktu halaktu halaktu halaktu. O Messenger of Allah, I'm ruined, I'm ruined. Prophet (ﷺ) said, wa ma ahlakak, what ruins you?
So he told the Prophet (ﷺ) the whole story. SubhanAllah, what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) says to a person in those moments is so crucial. He's so vulnerable.
The Prophet (ﷺ) could say to him, indeed shame on you. Shame on you. That woman understood deen. You don't understand anything.
How dare you, how disgusting, get out of my face, go home, wash your face, 'ayb 'alayk. How shameful of you to act in this way. Look at what the Prophet (ﷺ) says and you'll understand why he's
rahmatun lil 'alamin and why the One who sent him is ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful sent as mercy to the world.
He said (ﷺ), anta 'abdun arada Allahu bika khayran. You are a servant of Allah that Allah wanted good for. What? Allah wanted good for me?
I just went and I disgraced myself by trying to touch this woman and this woman with a shameful past shamed me in the present and said, this isn't who we are anymore. Allah brought Islam and you are the one through whom Allah brought Islam.
Allah wants good for me? The Prophet (ﷺ) said, idha arada Allahu 'azza wa jalla bi 'abdin khayran 'ajjala lahu 'uqubat dhanbihi.
When Allah wants good for a servant, He hastens the punishment for his sin in this world. He lets him taste the consequence of his sin in this world.
The opposite side of that, wa idha arada bi 'abdin sharran, amsaka 'alayhi bi dhanbihi hatta yuwaafi bihi yawm al-qiyamah ka annahu 'ayr. But if Allah wants bad for a person, meaning a person is insisting and doesn't have a good
disposition and is trying to move away from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, Allah 'azza wa jalla will delay the consequence of that sin until Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala raises him up on the Day of Judgment and he's like a wild beast running around intoxicated, lost.
What do I do? I'm in trouble. I'm in trouble. I'm in trouble. I want to unpack this hadith bi idhnillahi ta'ala in the multiple lessons.
Again, the woman herself, a woman who had that sinful past, Allah 'azza wa jalla guided her and look, this woman with a sinful past appears like a shaykha in this narration,
noble, like a sage. How long is that period? How long was she Muslim? A few weeks, a few months, maximum a year or two? And look how Allah 'azza wa jalla transformed her to be able to do that.
And she understands the rahmah of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala very well because can you imagine how Shaytan was attacking that woman and saying, oh, you think you're going to make yourself a religious person around the Prophet (ﷺ) now? I know who you are.
You know who you are. She didn't let that paralyze her. She didn't descend back into her old habits once the circumstances that reminded her of those old days came back.
And that's one of the ways we fall back into sin, the first test, the circumstances arise once again and suddenly you forget all the progress that you made and you get pulled right back into that behavior. So this is the first thing, the woman herself.
And SubhanAllah, we know of another more popular hadith where Allah 'azza wa jalla sent a dog to a woman just like that woman in her old days, a woman that was baghiya, a woman that was known for her sinfulness.
Allah sent a thirsty dog to her so that her heart could be moved so that she could give water to that dog so that Allah could forgive her so that Allah 'azza wa jalla could reward her. That's a rahmah.
Allah sees this woman sinning, going away. Allah 'azza wa jalla sends the dog, puts the dog in her place. Allah turns her heart towards the dog. Allah 'azza wa jalla activates her senses to go get water for the dog and then Allah forgives
and Allah rewards. But here's what I want you to understand and pay very close attention to this lesson. The same ar-Rahman who sent the thirsty dog so that the woman could give that dog water so
that Allah could forgive her is the same ar-Rahman that sent the wall to smack that man in the face so that the blood would flow from his face and he would wake up so that Allah 'azza
wa jalla will forgive him so that he will wake up so Allah will reward him. It's all in the same spirit. Sometimes it comes in the form of an act of charity and your heart moves.
Sometimes it comes in the form of an instant consequence that you hate. But both times it comes from the same Rabb who is giving you a way back to Him to forgive you and to reward you and to guide you back.
So it's the same spirit in which the wall is being sent, in which the dog is being sent, in which the blood is flowing, in which the water is being given.
It's all coming under the domain, the umbrella of Allah's rahmah, of Allah's mercy. Sometimes Allah punishes you out of mercy.
Sometimes Allah allows you to taste the consequence of your sin out of mercy. Sometimes Allah allows you to be ashamed and embarrassed here so that you will not be ashamed and embarrassed on the Day of Judgment.
This could all be from His mercy, subhanahu wa ta'ala. And as the scholars break down the hadith, SubhanAllah, the wall is a reminder, the blood is a purification.
The wall was a reminder, the blood is a purification because when the believer is struck with anything in this world, even a fever, if they are patient, if they seek the reward, then it is a form of kaffarah li adh-dhunub.
It's a form of removing a sin and a form of elevating the rank of that person. And look at the young man himself. He got the lesson. Sometimes Allah 'azza wa jalla doesn't send you one wall.
Sometimes you run into four walls and you still don't run back to Him. And at some point, the walls will stop hitting you. At some point, you're not going to taste the consequences of your sin here. And perhaps that is a terrifying warning that you will have to taste the consequences of
your sin in the Hereafter. Look at this young man. You are a man. And certainly the Prophet (ﷺ) knows who he's talking to. arada Allahu bika khayran. Allah wants good for you. The Prophet (ﷺ) knows who he's talking to.
This is like the person who Allah 'azza wa jalla says, inna alladhina ittaqaw idha massahum ta'ifun mina ash-shaytani tadhakkaru fa idha hum mubsirun
that verily those who are pious, when Shaytan strikes them with a whisper, with a pull, a moment, it only takes a moment to commit one of these sins. This is a good young man. radhi Allahu ta'ala 'anhu. This is a good young man.
But he got caught in the moment. And that can happen to even good people. But what happens after is what defines his goodness. That's not what happens in the moment. tadhakkaru, they remember, fa idha hum mubsirun.
walladhina idha fa'alu fahishatan aw dhalamu anfusahum. dhakaru Allaha, fastaghfaru li dhunubihim. Right? There is something about the moment that follows the moment of sin that if you've been preparing
yourself with piety, you wake up quicker to it, and you wake up regretful and wanting redemption from Allah. You don't say, oh, well, I've already come this far. Let me keep going. I already messed up this much.
I already took two steps in. Let me go ahead and take another 20. I mean, this is just not a good day for me. I'm going to be punished anyway. Let me keep going into the sin. What I also want you to pay attention to, dear brothers and sisters, is as the scholars
mentioned, wa min rahmatillahi bi 'abdihi an yuqidhahu min ghaflatih bima yakrah. From the mercy of Allah to His slave is that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wakes you up from
your sin with what you hate because you need the wake up call. And you know, when someone needs to wake you up from a deep sleep, the kind reminders don't work sometimes. Right? Call your name. It's not working.
Eventually it's got to be just cold water. Now when you wake up from the cold water, you want to hit the person that put cold water on you. Then you realize that they woke you up for salat al-fajr. And you had to be woken up.
And that was a mercy from them to you and to Allah 'azza wa jalla belongs the highest example. And the last message of this hadith, which is very important. Beware for the one who isn't punished for their sin in this world and they don't repent
from that sin. As a scholar said, al-khawfu min adh-dhanb idh lam tusahibhu al-'uqubah. That a person should be afraid of a dhanb idh lam tusahibhu al-'uqubah.
If the sin is not accompanied by a punishment, if you don't feel the pinch of a sin, nor the urge to repent after a sin, then be very careful.
Because Allah 'azza wa jalla mentions, sanastadrijuhum haythu la ya'lamun. We pull them in from places they don't know. ayyad ni'ma. You know, if someone is sinning and the blessings are still coming and they're still sinning
and they're not facing consequence and punishment, they should be afraid that this is istidraj. Perhaps Allah is reeling me in. innallaha layumli li adh-dhalim hatta idha akhadhahu lam yuflit. Allah reels in the oppressor, lets a dhalim go until He snatches him and then He never
lets him go. Then the punishment is there. So a person should be afraid if they're getting away with it. You know, if you watch a movie today or if you think about how it is now, someone commits
a sin and then they look up or they look to see, am I facing any consequences for this sin? Is anything happening to me as a result of this sin?
And if nothing is happening as a result of that sin, then they say, oh, okay, I'm good. And the Shaytan encourages them. See, that wasn't so bad. Do it again. You're oppressing your family. Keep going. You're cheating in your work. It's all right.
You're watching this stuff. You're doing this. You're in this haram relationship. It's all right. Nothing bad's happening. You're not getting struck by lightning. That is exactly the attitude of Quraysh in jahiliyyah by the way.
You know, when they were crucifying Khubayb ibn 'Adiyy (رضي الله عنه), a great companion of the Prophet (ﷺ), they crucified him. Literally, if you go to 'Umrah today and you go to Masjid 'A'ishah, the area of Tan'im to
redo your ihram, that's where Khubayb (رضي الله عنه) was crucified. And when Khubayb was being crucified, he made du'a against them. And what did they do? Quraysh, kuffar, they all hit the ground because they were worried that lightning was going
to strike them from above. Is it clear now? It's clear now. We can come back up. That's a terrible mindset for a person to have.
Instead, if Allah has spared you this long despite your bad behavior, if Allah has spared you this long despite your sin, realize that you're in the gentle stage of being reminded
to repent. And if something happened to you as a result of your sin, you got punished, you got humiliated, you got hurt, say alhamdulillah. You needed the cold water to wake you up.
You needed something more severe to wake you up. And perhaps you're a person that Allah 'azza wa jalla wants good for so that you are not punished in the Hereafter. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala spare us of the consequences of our sins.
May Allah 'azza wa jalla drown the entirety of our sins with just a little bit of His mercy. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala guide us to heed the reminders around us so that we do not become complacent with our good in a way that would lead us to delusion and we
do not become complacent with our sin in a way that would lead us down the path of the devil. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala forgive us for when we ignore what He sends to us for our own good. Allahumma ameen. Alhamdulillah. As-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah wa 'ala alihi wa sahbihi wa man wala. Allahumma ighfir lil mu'minina wal mu'minat wal muslimina wal muslimat.
