What the Qur’an Says About Christianity | Snapshots with Imam Tom Facchine

Christians and Muslims actually have more in common than some might think. We both worship God, although we disagree on core principles of our faiths, like what came after Jesus. Watch the Snapshot to see how the Qur’an praises and criticizes Christians, challenges their beliefs, and calls them back to one God.

How is Christianity and Christians talked about in the Qur'an? One of the essential features is that in the Qur'an, Allah stresses that our God and your God is one.
That the God of Christianity and the God of Islam are the same God. In chapter 29, verse 46, Allah says, Do not argue with the people of the book unless by doing so gracefully, except with those of them who act wrongly.
And say, We believe in what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to you. Our God and your God is only one, and to Him we fully submit. This is also evidenced by the fact that Christian Arabs use the word Allah.
That this is not some strange exotic deity or some pagan cult. That the word for God in Arabic is Allah. We also see in chapter 3, verse 84, Allah says,
Say, O Prophet, We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and his descendants. And what was given to Moses and Jesus and the other prophets from their Lord.
We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we fully submit. So we not only believe in the same God, but we also have the same prophets. We believe in Jesus, we believe in Moses, we believe in all of the prophets that you'll find in the Bible.
With the addition of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The second point is that in the Qur'an, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala recognizes that Christians themselves are not a monolith. That every group of people has good and bad.
In chapter 3, verse 75, Allah says, There are some among the people of the book who, if they were entrusted with a stack of gold, they would readily return it.
Yet there are others who, if entrusted with a single coin, would not repay it unless you constantly demand it. In chapter 3, verses 113 to 115, Allah says, Yet they are not all alike. There are some among the people of the book who are upright,
who recite Allah's revelations throughout the night, prostrating in prayer. They believe in Allah and the last day, they encourage good and forbid evil, and they race with one another in doing good. They are truly among the righteous.
They will never be denied the reward for any good they have done, and Allah has perfect knowledge of those who are mindful of Him. That being said, while Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is very fair and just and nuanced in how He deals with Christians in the Qur'an,
He also has criticism for them, especially when it comes to the heresies that they fell into in later years after Jesus' time. And these heresies, we could put them into two categories. First, when it comes to method, and the second when it comes to content.
So when it comes to method, how do we know that what is true is true or that what we're claiming is true? In chapter 5, verse 14, Allah says, And from those who say, we are Christians, we took their covenant, but they neglected a portion of what they had been commanded to uphold.
So we let hostility and enmity arise between them until the day of judgment, and soon Allah will inform them of all they have done. In chapter 3, verse 78, Allah says,
There are some among them who distort the book with their tongues to make you think that the distortion is from the book, but it is not what the book says. They say it is from Allah, but it is not from Allah. And so they attribute lies to Allah knowingly.
And finally, in chapter 2, verse 79, Allah says, So woe be to those who distort the scripture with their own hands. Then they say, this is from Allah, seeking a fleeting gain thereby.
So woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they have earned. Allah condemns people who are tampering with his revelations or who neglect to uphold some of it.
When it comes to content, the biggest object of critique is the trinity or the doctrine of the trinity, which was introduced later into the interpretation of the New Testament. Allah says in chapter 5, verse 17,
Indeed, those who say Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary, have fallen into disbelief. Say, O Prophet, who has the power to prevent Allah if he were to choose to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, his mother, and everyone in the world altogether?
To Allah alone belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything in between. He creates whatever he wills, and Allah is most capable of everything. And again, in chapter 4, verse 171, O people of the book, don't go to extremes regarding your faith.
Say nothing about Allah except what is true. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger of Allah and the fulfillment of his word through Mary and a spirit created by his command.
So believe in Allah and his messengers, and don't say three, don't say trinity. Stop for your own good. Allah is only one God. Glory be to him. He is far above having a son.
To him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah is sufficient as a trustee of affairs. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, even beyond just telling the Christians that they have made a mistake, he tries to reason with them and tries to call them back to what is true.
In chapter 5, verse 75, Allah says, The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. Many messengers have come and gone before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food.
See how we make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded from the truth. If Jesus were God, would he have the need to eat food? Of course not. Allah is using a rational argument here to prove to you that Jesus was a man.
He was a prophet, just like every other prophet that you know and love. Moses, Abraham, Jacob, Isaac, the whole line of them. They all ate food, they all slept, they all were born to parents. That this is something that is non-negotiable.
That Jesus was a human being. And finally, in chapter 3, verse 59, Allah says, Indeed, the example of Jesus in the sight of Allah is just like that of Adam. Allah created him from dust, then said to him, Be, and he was.
So if someone were to say, well, no, Jesus is different because he was born of a virgin. It was a virgin birth, it was a miraculous birth and that proves that he's divine. Allah answers that by saying, well, by that logic, then Adam should be more divine than Jesus.
Adam should be higher than the son of God because Adam not only had no father, but he had no mother as well. But despite the criticism, it's important to recognize that we Muslims see Christians as our brothers.
As people who received revelation, that's why they're called the people of revelation or the people of the book throughout the Qur'an. So, why don't you see us as the same? Allah actually explains why. In chapter 3, verse 64, Allah says,
And associate none with him, nor take one another as lords instead of Allah. But if they turn away, say then to them, bear witness that we have submitted to Allah alone.
Allah pinpoints that, unfortunately, the reason that Christians reject Muslims and reject them as brothers in faith is mostly due to jealousy. In chapter 2, verse 109, Allah says,
But pardon and bear with them until Allah delivers his decision. Surely, Allah is most capable of everything. And the proof that there's jealousy going on is that you will find historically and even today,
many Christians would prefer to ally with people who don't believe in anything at all, or even pagans or heretics or polytheists, as opposed to with Muslims with whom they have much more in common.
This is actually referred to in the Qur'an in chapter 5, verse 50. Allah says, Is it the judgment of pre-Islamic ignorance that they seek? Meaning the judgment of the polytheists and the judgment of the idolaters? Would they prefer that?
When who could be a better judge than Allah for people of sure faith? We have a duty as people of faith, as people who believe in God, as people who believe in revelation and prophethood. We have a duty to follow. And we have a duty to follow the truth wherever we find it.
That's why Allah says in chapter 5, verse 15, Oh, people of the book, now our messenger, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), has come to you, revealing much of what you have hidden of the scriptures and disregarding much.
There certainly has come to you from Allah a light and a clear book. So what will you do with the opportunity to believe?
