Coke or Pepsi. Democrat or Republican. Moderate or extreme, scholar or activist, principle or relevance. Every one of these "choices" was built by someone else, and the moment you accept their categories, you've already lost the argument before it starts. In this Snapshot, Imam Tom Facchine shows how the Qur'an and the Prophet (s) modeled a way out of false binaries, refusing the trap entirely instead of picking a side.

This episode covers:

— The oldest trick used to control what you think your options are

— Who really gets to decide what counts as "moderate" or "extreme"

— Why two things can be true at once, and how that breaks false binaries

— The questions real leadership starts with

00:00One of the oldest tricks of the powerful is to control the available options. Coke or Pepsi, McDonald's or Burger King, Democrat or Republican.
00:12All the while in the back room they're friends. They collude to set prices and agendas. They vacation on the same islands. Muslims are often told we need to choose between these types of binaries, these false choices.
00:23Principle vs. Relevance, Piety vs. Action, Religious vs. Rational. False choices force Muslims to negotiate against themselves before the conversation even begins.
00:33The Qur'an repeatedly breaks false binaries. You find strength with mercy. You find worship with politics. You find dunya with akhirah and patience with action. The Prophet ﷺ was gentle without being weak. He was also strategic without being manipulative.
00:48And of course he was firm without being cruel. Many Muslims lose before they even finish their sentence because they accept the opponent's categories or false choices. We're told there is a moderate vs. an extreme.
00:59For some people, wearing the hijab is extreme. Praying five times a day is extreme. That's not our metric. That's not how we evaluate ourselves. Practical can sometimes mean willing to betray our principles. Relevant can sometimes mean being approved by the dominant culture.
01:14And if you haven't checked the dominant culture today and the state of it, you should ask yourself, do you really want approval from that? Wasn't there a guy in India who sued his parents for giving birth to him? So this is kind of like the final logical expression of individualism.
01:27It's like, it's kufr in the linguistic sense, kufr an-ni'mah. It's the denial and rejection of actually a blessing that Allah gave you to relate to it in a mode of gratitude.
01:41Who created this framework and who benefits from it? What possibilities might be hidden from me? False choices also happen within our Muslim communities. We have the scholar vs. the activist. We have spirituality vs. strategy.
01:55We have effort vs. institution building. Leadership requires integrative thinking. The Islamic tradition is vast enough to hold multiple truths at once.
02:06In the Qur'an, Allah mentions her saying something is true about what happens when nations go to war. And Allah affirms it. The Prophet affirmed that there was a time when Iblis told the truth.
02:19Two things can be true at the same time. Some people, just to give a modern example, think that imperialism is only a Western thing. And they go down the rabbit hole until they deny what happened in Bosnia and Syria and what's happening in East Turkestan.
02:33Because it doesn't match their anti-Western narrative. Two things can be true at once. Now, if you want to see an example of someone who is a master. Again, a modern example of someone who is a master and embodied this. That would be Malcolm X. I encourage you to look at his interviews.
02:47Especially when journalists are always trying to trap him in false choices and false binaries. And he skillfully turns it back on them. And for you, when thinking about what you can do. When you're given two options, Ask yourself, is this actually a binary?
03:00Are these really the only two choices? What other possibilities does Islam open, or could there be? And what values are being smuggled into the wording and the choices that are being presented to me?
03:11Leadership begins when you stop accepting the world as it's handed to you. Especially handed to you by an opponent.
